How to Stay Consistent with Your Habits (Even When Life is Crazy!)
Spring is here, and if you’re anything like me, this season feels like a whirlwind. The school year is winding down, the kids’ schedules are packed, and somehow, every single weekend is filled with birthday parties, sports games, and end-of-year performances.
It’s a lot. And in seasons like this, the first thing to fall apart? Our habits.
You know—those little things that help us feel our best? Suddenly, they feel impossible to keep up with.
You want to exercise, but there’s no time.
You want to eat well, but drive-thru dinners are just easier.
You want to stick to your morning routine, but the snooze button wins every time.
If this is you right now, take a deep breath. You’re not failing—life is just busy. And instead of beating yourself up or waiting for things to ‘slow down’ (because let’s be real… do they ever?), I want to share a little mindset shift that will help you stay consistent—without the all-or-nothing pressure.

The Secret to Staying Consistent: ‘At Least’ Habits
If you’ve been following along on BOLD INTENTIONAL LIFE, we’ve been talking a lot about getting out of perfectionist, all-or-nothing thinking. Because when we think we have to do something perfectly or it doesn’t count? We end up doing nothing at all.
That’s where ‘at least’ habits come in.
Instead of holding yourself to the ideal version of your habit (which, let’s be honest, might not be realistic right now), you create a bare minimum version—the at least version—that keeps you moving forward.
For example:
✅ Instead of “I have to work out for 45 minutes” → “At least I’ll go for a walk”
✅ Instead of “I have to meal prep a whole week’s worth of food” → “At least I’ll throw together 3 go-to meals.”
✅ Instead of “I have to drink a gallon of water” → “At least I’ll drink one glass before my coffee.”
See the difference? It’s not about doing everything. It’s about doing something. And when you keep showing up—even in a small way—you stay in momentum.
How to Build ‘At Least’ Habits for Your Life
So how do you actually make this work? Let’s break it down into three simple steps.
1️⃣ Create a Flexible Routine
Rigid routines are great in theory, but life rarely goes as planned. Instead of setting up routines that only work on perfect days, build in flexibility.
Instead of “I have to work out every morning at 6 AM” → “I’ll move my body at some point today.”
Instead of “I have to meditate for 10 minutes in silence” → “I’ll take 3 deep breaths before my coffee.”
This way, when your day doesn’t go as planned (because, let’s be honest, it won’t), you’re not completely thrown off.
2️⃣ Adjust Your Expectations
Not every season of life requires the same level of effort. What worked in January when life was slow and cozy might not work now when you’re practically living at the soccer field.
Ask yourself:
What’s essential for me in this season?
What’s extra that I can let go of?
Maybe right now, dinner isn’t about gourmet home-cooked meals—it’s about easy, repeatable options that don’t stress you out. Maybe workouts aren’t about hitting the gym—they’re about squeezing in movement wherever you can.
This isn’t giving up. It’s being realistic.
3️⃣ Make Your ‘At Least’ List
Now, let’s actually build out your ‘at least’ habits. Take a look at the things that make you feel good and create a baseline version that you can stick to—no matter how busy life gets.
Here are some examples:
Exercise: Full version → 45-minute gym session → At least 5-minute stretch
Healthy Eating: Full version → Cooking every meal at home → At least swapping one meal for a healthier option
Hydration: Full version → A gallon of water → At least one glass before coffee
Self-Care: Full version → A long journaling session → At least writing one sentence before bed
When you create realistic versions of your habits, you stay consistent—even in the busiest seasons.
Progress Over Perfection
Spring might be busy. Life might feel overwhelming. But consistency isn’t about doing things perfectly—it’s about doing them more often than not.
So, take a deep breath and ask yourself: What’s my ‘at least’ version?
Because even small efforts add up. And you, my friend? You’re doing better than you think.
