162: Boost Your Well-Being by Embracing Presence Over Balance with Jenn Trepeck

In our fast-paced world, the idea of balancing everything can feel impossible. But what if we shifted our focus from balance to presence? Jenn and I unpacked this transformative concept, and I can’t wait to share what I learned with you.

Embrace the Venn Diagram of Life

One of the most enlightening parts of our conversation was the Venn diagram metaphor. Instead of viewing different areas of our lives—like work, family, and personal passions—as separate and competing circles, Jenn encourages us to see where they overlap and support each other. This perspective helps us realize that time spent in one area can actually benefit another.

For instance, when I take time for a workout, I’m not just ticking off a box on my to-do list; I’m boosting my energy and mood, which helps me be more present and engaged with my family. This interconnectedness can create a more harmonious life.

Prioritize Self-Care to Lead by Example

If it’s been said a million times, lets say it a million more: self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. By taking care of ourselves, we set a powerful example for those around us. When our kids see us making our well-being a priority, they learn the importance of self-care too. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing what’s possible and sustainable in life.

Write Things Down to Clear Mental Space

I don’t know about you, but my mind often feels like it’s running a mile a minute. Jenn shared a simple yet effective tip: write things down. By getting our thoughts, tasks, and worries out of our heads and onto paper, we create more mental space to be present. It’s a game-changer for reducing overwhelm and increasing focus.

So whether that’s a post it, a notebook you carry around, using the notes app on your phone, having a paper calendar/planner, or just scribbling your thoughts down on a random piece of paper- getting those thoughts out of your head and onto something physical will help you so much with the mental load and overwhelm.

Focus on One Thing at a Time

Multitasking can make us feel productive, but it often leaves us scattered and stressed. Jenn advocates for focusing on one thing at a time. This might sound counterintuitive in our multitasking world, but when we give our full attention to one task, we do it better and more efficiently. Plus, we can fully enjoy the experience instead of feeling pulled in a thousand directions.

Use Time Blocking to Schedule Realistically

Time blocking has been a lifesaver for me, and Jenn echoed its importance. By scheduling specific blocks of time for different activities, we can manage our energy levels and daily routines more effectively. This includes setting aside time for self-care, work, family, and personal passions. When we schedule realistically, we’re less likely to overcommit and more likely to be present in each moment.

Pair Enjoyable Tasks with Chores

One of my favorite practical tips from Jenn is to pair tasks you enjoy with chores you don’t. For example, I love catching up with friends, so I make calls while folding laundry. This little trick turns mundane tasks into opportunities for joy and connection, making them feel less like chores and more like meaningful moments.

Shifting from a mindset of balance to one of presence has been a revelation for me, and I hope it will be for you too. It’s about finding joy in the interconnectedness of our lives and being fully engaged in whatever we’re doing at the moment.
