149. The Kindness Method: Insights From Our January Book Club

We just wrapped up our first month of The Positively You Book Club and the conversation we had was absolutely incredible. A huge thanks to the amazing women who joined in on reading the book, who DM’d me messages, replied to emails, and of course who showed up on Zoom in our live book club with their insights after reading The Kindness Method.

I'm absolutely thrilled to share today's special treat – a recording of our lively January book club discussion. So, if you missed the live meeting or haven't finished the book, don't worry. You're in for a treat as we unravel the insights from "The Kindness Method" by Sheru Izadi.

Unveiling Insights into Habit Change

Our discussion touched upon the book's approach to habit change. We talked about the importance of starting small and understanding the root causes of setbacks. We discovered that recognizing our triggers and investigating the reasons behind relapses offers a powerful perspective shift. It's a reminder that lasting change often begins with incremental steps and a deep understanding of our motivations.

Overcoming Perfectionism: Lapses vs. Relapses

The ladies shared experiences related to perfectionism and how the book introduced the concept of distinguishing between lapses and relapses. Understanding that momentary setbacks don't erase all progress is a valuable mindset shift. Book Clubber, Andie shared an analogy of a flat tire, highlighting the importance of fixing the tire without succumbing to the temptation of slashing the other three. This distinction helps cultivate a forgiving attitude toward oneself.

The Power of Preparation and Vision Boards

The book's emphasis on the importance of preparation was discussed, resonating with last wee’s podcast episode with Kelli France, who advocated for a prep week in goal-setting. The idea of creating a vision board came up, illustrating how planning for potential obstacles and envisioning success plays a crucial role in achieving long-term goals.

Unveiling Negative Core Beliefs

Book Clubber Chelsi bravely shared her realization about negative core beliefs surrounding self-deserving. Her connection with the book's message about shedding emotional weight tied into her own experiences. This highlights the book's effectiveness in bringing awareness to deep-seated beliefs that may be hindering personal growth.

Transformative Maps: Conversation About Me and Someone I Love

In the book are transformative maps that the author has you do throughout the journey through The Kindness Method. Chapters, "Conversations About Me" and "Someone I Love," were two of my favorites. The Paperclip Challenge, used to track negative self-talk, emerged as a powerful tool. The comparison between conversations we have with ourselves and those we have with loved ones reinforces the need for self-compassion. Remember the importance of investigating, observing, and approaching our inner dialogue with curiosity.

The Power of Kindness Over Niceness

One thought I had while reading was the difference between being nice to ourselves and being kind. While being nice might involve avoiding challenging conversations, kindness encompasses embracing those hard conversations with self-awareness and openness. The resistance to certain exercises within the book emphasized the need for both niceness and kindness in our self-transformation journey.

Final Thoughts

As we wrap up our discussion, the collective sentiment was one of excitement and self-discovery. I’m so happy that "The Kindness Method" resonated with the our Positively You community on multiple levels, from breaking perfectionist tendencies to unveiling deep-seated beliefs hindering personal growth. The book, with its practical exercises and transformative maps, has become a valuable guide for navigating the path to positive change.

If you're ready for a paradigm shift and looking for a practical approach to self-improvement, consider picking up "The Kindness Method" and join us on this incredible journey toward embracing positive change.

Until next time, keep shining, stay positive, and remember, you are deserving of the life you envision!
